Lifelong Rappahannock County residents John and Mary (not their real names) were about to slip off the edge. Mary was depressed and despondent about her health concerns, even though the couple had recently had a ramp installed to help her get to medical appointments. Although they owned their own home, they were just barely making it financially. Mortgage payments ate up a huge chunk of their monthly income. John is a skilled carpenter and was always able to find enough work to keep them going. Then when a health concern arose for John, he had to cut back his work and their income dropped. Unable to keep up with the mortgage payments, they were facing foreclosure. Fortunately, there was help at hand; the Rappahannock Benevolent Fund was able to intervene before things completely unraveled for John and Mary.
